Three Wealthy People

The director, author and narrator Andrew Welch, came to me to storyboard and animate part of his short film, comparing the lives and perspectives of three characters finding their way in the world, each one representing a different kind of wealth.

I was originally only supposed to be working on the character animation, but then the other animator stalled on their section for a over a month, then bailed on the project completely. So, I was called back in to animate rest of the film in it's entirety.

After the last few years of motion graphics, it felt great to jump back in to a lengthy character animation project again.

Here the original designs I sent to Andrew, along with little breakdowns of the proposed art style (please excuse any spelling mistakes). Dispite the scope of the script, the budget wasn't high. so I had to come up with characters that would be quick and easy to rig and animate, will still being expresive and charming.

In the end I went for an almost stick figure look. All simple shapes for the head and torso, with thin, wiry legs that would be really easy to rig and animate using rubberhose.

Since they all use the exact same template, I only had to build one character rig, then I could just swap out colours, hair, clothes etc, to make new characters.
